What is Gingivitis?

. . . .

Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease, characterized by spontaneous bleeding or bleeding during brushing, bad taste or bad breath (halitosis), and redness of the gums. Generally, there is little or no discomfort at this stage. Gingivitis is often caused by inadequate oral hygiene. If a proper gingivitis treatment and good home care are provided, it is reversible.

It is necessary to clean the accumulated bacteria by removing dental plaque and tartar. This treatment, known as professional prophylaxis (or scaling, or “deep cleaning”), is performed by dental professionals, including dental hygienists, dentists, or periodontists. Additionally, it is essential to explain how to properly brush teeth and gums to keep them clean and prevent the recurrence of gingivitis.

What is Periodontitis?

. . . .

When gingivitis goes unnoticed or is not properly treated, it progresses to periodontitis, which leads to irreversible destruction of the supporting tissues of the tooth. Periodontitis is a severe gum infection that damages the soft tissues and destroys the bone surrounding the teeth. It can cause the teeth to become loose and may lead to tooth loss.

Treatment of Periodontitis

The treatment has several phases, depending on the degree of severity of the disease, either one phase or both.

  • In the first, basic phase of treatment, bacteria will be removed from the periodontal pockets by scaling and root planing, which involves cleaning bacteria, plaque and calculus from the roots of the teeth. Sometimes this phase of treatment is accompanied by the use of antibiotics.

  • In aggressive or advanced disease, a second phase of treatment is necessary, which will consist of accessing these deep periodontal pockets. This phase is called periodontal surgery.

  • When the patient is stable, the maintenance phase begins, which is a fundamental stage of periodontal treatment and the only way to achieve long-term control of periodontitis. It is important to emphasise that periodontal maintenance is not only a professional prophylaxis (‘mouth cleaning’), but an individualised medical action adapted to the needs of each patient.the frequency of maintenance is defined for each case, normally maintenance visits are every 3 or 6 months.

"By taking care of your gums, you're taking care of your heart"

The relationship between the oral cavity and the rest of the body is not a new concept. Recent research links periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease due to their high frequency. It has been determined that periodontal bacteria, including Porphyromonas gingivalis, are associated with the formation of atherosclerotic plaques that cause acute coronary syndrome.
